"The birth rate is affected by what happened a quarter century earlier," says gynecologist Hendrix Came (UZ Brussels). "After the war, in the golden fifties, there was a baby boom in which many children were born from the mid-1980s, there were -. Partly because of the crisis -. Fewer births so now, a quarter century later, even fewer women get those kids. "

It is the third year in a row that a decline in births is determined. "However, the number of births is still with us," says Dr Came. "Our mother is a statistically 1.70 children. The indigenous population is 1.50 and 2.90 in the immigrant population. Elsewhere in Europe, especially in the southern countries, is still a lot less. Spain takes only 1.3 children per mother. "
